| Should Fuel Bars be eaten before after or during exercise?
Before:
Fuel Bars relatively high carbohydrate content make them ideal for use before exercise. The timing depends on the athlete's preference, but researchers have found that eating from 1 to 4 hours before exercise helps keep plenty of blood glucose available for working muscles. It is also critical to drink plenty of cool water before exercise to keep muscles hydrated.
During:
Drink at least a half a cup of water or sports drink every 20 minutes of exercise. Usually there is no need to worry about replacing carbohydrates unless the exercise last over 90 minutes and is hard and continuous. For those more extreme endurance athletes, a Fuel Bar is an easily digested source of carbohydrates and essential fats and will boost your endurance, speed and reaction time. Half a bar to a bar an hour (120-240 calories) should be sufficient to replenish spent muscle and brain fuel, boost your energy and think more clearly. If you are training for long distance, practice eating while cycling/running/etc., your stomach needs to get used to handling food while exercising.
After:
If the exercise was strenuous and over time, glycogen stores may need refueling. Eating a Fuel Bar right after exercise will replenish these glycogen stores and the protein will help with muscle recovery. No matter the intensity of the exercise, it's important to drink plenty of water and eat a balanced, nutritious meal that has lots of carbohydrate rich foods such as grains, pastas, potatoes, vegetables and fruits. |
